Teaching coding without PC’s and proposed Certification of IT Teachers

A shortage of computer scientists and an even more serious need for coding and software development facilities in the country’s low-income areas, has prompted innovation in reaching these disadvantaged communities.
TANKS and BOATS Coding Apps introduces coding to learners who do not have access to PCs. It uses tangible tokens and image recognition using mobile phones to assist with teaching coding.
Prof. Jean Greyling
Nelson Mandela University Professor in Computing Sciences, Prof. Jean Greyling has used the app to reached around 25000 learners through direct workshops, and distributed coding kits to nearly 500 schools across the country.
Prof. Jean Greyling will be sharing his involvement and success in teaching coding to school children across the country.
The British Computer Society (BCS), Australian Computer Society and the New Zealand Institute for IT Professionals accredit Computer Science, Information Science (Systems) and IT degree and diploma programmes in their relevant countries. The BCS provides certification, scholarships and continuous training for IT teachers in Britain. Teachers can obtain the qualification ‘BCS Certificate in Computer Science Teaching’.
Prof Andre Calitz
Prof Andre Calitz is involved with the South African Computer Accreditation Board (SACAB) and the Southern African Computer Lectures' Association (SACLA). He will share his ideas on how the IITPSA and the SACAB can accredit IT related degree and diploma programmes in South Africa. He will further share his ideas on introducing a recognised Certificate in Computer Science Teaching for South African IT Teachers.
