A new DAB+ trial is expected to start in Gauteng in August. The previous trial ended in May this year. Licencing for a further trial was held up during the lock down. It is expected that there will be a service in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
There is presently also a DAB+ trial running in the Cape Town area from the Constantia berg Sentech site. Transmit power is 2 kW on channel 13F 239.200 MHz. The signal is good considering the low transmitter power from Constantia berg and the fact it does not provide Cape Town with complete coverage. Numerous gap fillers would be needed but this is expected.
Although the Minister of Communication and Digital Technologies has issued a directive to ICASA to develop the necessary regulations for the introduction of Digital Sound Broadcasting, ICASA has not yet issued a timetable or details of the process the Authority will follow.
